Melbourne – NEC today announced it has secured its largest data deal in NSW by securing a multi-million dollar deal with the University of New England.

The five-year deal will see NEC working with vendors Enterasys, Fortinet and Barracuda, along with specialist security distributor WhiteGold Solutions, to provide the university with an integrated solution which comprises of a new and complete data infrastructure in the core and edge, the latest wireless technology, Internet security and email anti spam capabilities, as well as the latest carrier-grade firewall technology.

The deal with the university is the largest wireless deal for networking company Enterasys and the largest wireless roll out for NEC.

The solution will see NEC as the lead technology partner providing 24x7 support to the university through its Network Operations Centre, systems design, integration and professional services.  Enterasys will supply the university’s network requirements, with Fortinet providing Internet security and firewall solutions and Barracuda the email anti-spam and anti-virus appliances.

The new solution will enable the university to identify rogue devices anywhere in the network and once identified, the device can be locked away in a secure VLAN with minimal network accessibility, removing the threat of network infections from these devices.

According to Gordon Smith, Principal IT officer at the university, NEC and its partners were chosen as the companies collectively provided a depth of product, experience and knowledge about the university’s various IT requirements.  “NEC and Enterasys in particular worked closely with us to provide the best solution and product mix to meet our current and future needs,” said Smith.

NEC’s role-based approach to infrastructure management has a particular emphasis on ease-of-use for the administration of additions, moves and changes.  The solution also allows for interoperability capabilities across the selected technologies, using standards based rather than proprietary protocols. It also allows the university to build multi-level anti spam detection via email.

NEC Executive General Manager, Business Solutions Group, National Sales and Marketing Rocco Arico says that the company delivered a best-practice approach with regard to technology. “One of the things that we did which led us to be chosen was the fact that we did not position ourselves as experts across technology fields but rather having an expert team with specific expertise in their respective areas, hence our strategic partnering with leading companies such as Enterasys and Whitegold,” said Arico.

As part of the solution, Enterasys will be providing the university with over 350 data switches and 300 access points across the campus.

“Our solution delivers Network Admission Control (NAC) to ensure only the right users have access to the right information from the right place at the right time.  UNE is one of the first Australian universities to implement this type of technology that provides firewall-like visibility and control on every wired and wireless connection throughout the entire network,” said Enterasys’ sales director, John Gonzalez.
