‘New policy plan a source of strength for Victoria’s ICT Industry’ - Tanaka
Release Date : Tuesday, 13 Dec 2005

The launch today of the Victorian Government’s new ICT industry plan has been described by NEC Business Solutions managing director, Riaki Tanaka, as a document of  ‘bold vision, that aims to strengthen the foundations of Victoria’s ICT industry for an exciting period of growth and development internationally’.

Commenting directly after the launch, Mr. Tanaka said the underlying basis of the policy is clear – “it wants the ICT industry to take the next step and become more competitive internationally than it already is, and NEC fully supports the premise of the policy and its objectives.”

He said the document clearly presents, judging from its intention, the key that will help open the world’s doors to unheralded economic opportunity not yet witnessed before in Victoria.

However, Mr. Tanaka believes the success of the policy will depend on how the Industry takes up the challenge and adopts the initiatives outlined in the document. “I think the industry will embrace it. If NEC is any guide, it (the industry) should receive it positively.”

“Initiatives like greater collaboration, increasing global profiles and skills development will create an environment of opportunity for Victorian ICT companies to forge ahead, be innovative and reap the benefits the plan believes it will help deliver.”

A policy document of critical importance to the long term viability of the ICT Industry, the Victorian Government has shown decisive leadership with its determination to extract the best Victoria has to offer and have the industry reap the rewards - further demonstrating it understands the sector.

According to Mr. Tanaka, the policy is a mature framework of intuition, vision and understanding which will engender growth and confidence and help drive the industry forward further than ever before.

“This is the fillip the Industry needs if it is to realise its full potential and deliver on all we know it can. But if the policy is to succeed the industry must be prepared to take the lead. If it doesn’t then we are subject to much of the same.”

“The document,” Mr. Tanaka said, “is not only the centre piece that will help build an even stronger industry, but it reinforces the Government’s commitment to the sector.’’

He said there hasn’t been a stronger advocate for Victoria’s ICT Industry locally and internationally than Minister Thomson. “The recent ICT Trade Mission to Japan led by the Minister and hosted by NEC, and the business success it has delivered, bares testimony to that.”

“The commitment of the Victorian Government and the world-class skills and infrastructure Victoria possesses, makes Victoria a highly attractive investment location, especially in the area of R&D.”

Mr. Tanaka said, “Minister Thomson and the Government must be congratulated for their unwavering support. They have been prepared to walk with industry. No other Minister or Government in this portfolio has shown this level of commitment before.”
