Broadband World Forum Europe, Berlin -- STAND 5028

NEC today announced its first products consistent with the SCOPE AdvancedTCA profiles– the AM3110 and AM3160, the latest in NEC’s MSAN (Multi-Service Access Node) broadband series.

As a founding member of SCOPE, NEC has contributed to the profiling of open industry specifications to meet the specific requirements of carrier grade telecoms equipment and encouraged a rich ecosystem of COTS (Commercial off the Shelf) building blocks.

The Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture of the AM3110 and AM3160 means that NEC’s next generation platform architecture has the industry leading open architecture backplane consistent with SCOPE profiles enabling the simple integration of third party modules and applications, a quicker time to market and more opportunities to optimise the mix and quantities of applications and services.

By adopting the industry’s open architecture, service providers benefit by avoiding proprietary and legacy architectures, and also from the use of proven components and sub-systems with access to multiple vendors for future development.  This lowers risk for telcos and is the key enabler in innovating new services.  Modular development from off-the-shelf component suppliers and rapid prototyping and product development drive faster service innovation delivering up to one-third development time savings.

By utilising open standards, NEC enables access to cost-effective and industry leading developments.  “Service providers can now enjoy uniform management and maintenance procedures reducing OPEX,” said John Del Papa, Executive General Manager, Telecommunications Network Systems, NEC Australia.   “This lowers the cost of integrating and customising solutions to specific service providers needs, reducing CAPEX and OPEX”.

As a SCOPE founder, NEC is working with other SCOPE members to develop common usage profiles for AdvancedTCA, AdvancedMC and MicroTCA that enhance interoperability, facilitate volume production of modular components, expand the open architecture ecosystem, and simplify integration for telecom equipment makers.

The SCOPE Alliance is an industry association aimed at accelerating the deployment of Carrier Grade Base Platforms for service provider applications. Its mission is to enable and promote the availability of open Carrier Grade Base Platforms based on Commercial off the Shelf (COTS) hardware and software building blocks, and to promote interoperability to better serve Service Providers and consumers.

SCOPE publishes common usage profiles for open architecture platforms like AdvancedTCA, AdvancedMC and MicroTCA that foster interoperability and address the technical requirements needed to integrate modular blades, shelves and modules in an open architecture environment. These profiles, in addition to facilitating interoperability, accelerate widespread deployment by enabling NEC to confidently make the investments needed to commercialise open architecture boards and shelves, which are the foundation for carrier grade base platforms.

“The launch of these products is further evidence that the open base platforms advocated by SCOPE support the efforts of leading network equipment providers to better serve their customers, enabling the introduction of sophisticated new products to market quickly and more cost effectively,” said Chris Wardale, Financial Officer of the SCOPE Alliance.
