Sydney Water and NEC partner to innovate Greater Western Sydney

Supporting a growing Greater Western Sydney to become a city of the future - that's the focus behind a new landmark partnership between Sydney Water and international technology and services provider NEC.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations underpins the NSW Government's vision to build 'Smart Cities' where technology is integrated throughout the cities to capture data and manage essential utilities.

Sydney Water's Managing Director Roch Cheroux said the partnership was crucial to supporting Greater Western Sydney's growth.

'The partnership with NEC is a perfect match in making sure Greater Western Sydney has world-class water infrastructure,' Mr Cheroux said.

'Cutting-edge technology will be crucial in ensuring the Western Parkland City is a resilient and sustainable place to live and work - and a place that can adapt and respond to future climate challenges.

'For example, embedded sensors throughout the city can help us detect changes in the weather - so we know when and where to water outdoors, and when to stop. That one example alone will help significantly in creating green and cool communities that deliver better outcomes for customers - and for the environment.'

NEC ANZ President and CEO Mitsuhiro Murooka agreed, saying it was an exciting time for both organisations - and for the broader Greater Western Sydney community.

'NEC is proud to partner with Sydney Water on this memorandum of understanding to help contribute expertise in digital technology services to deliver for the people in Greater Western Sydney,' he said.

'This is one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia, and NEC is looking forward to playing a role in its future development.'

The creation of the new Western Parkland City includes the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and surrounding Western Sydney Aerotropolis including commercial hubs, industry precincts, university, and other education facilities.

Sydney Water is Australia's largest water utility. NEC is one of the world’s largest companies and largest tech companies, with a strong focus on cloud computing, AI, and Internet-of-Things services and technology.
